Valero – DeMarco, The Raging Bull forces the Matador to Retire on Stool

Making the second defence of his WBC lightweight title Edwin Valero of Venezuela stopped Tijuana’s Antonio DeMarco to keep his 100 percent knockout ratio intact at Arena Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico.

General consensus before the bout was there was a real possibility the young Mexican could have been blown away in the opening rounds, however the further the fight went most felt this would be DeMarco’s territory and his best opportunity to take the champion into deep waters and drown him.  No one expected Valero to absolutely dominate every round.

The opening rounds went according to the script, habitual slow starter Antonio DeMarco stayed away patiently looking for openings from the hunting Valero.  In the second round an accidental elbow opened up a huge gash on the Venezuelans forehead, under the WBC rules DeMarco was deducted a point.

As the rounds slipped by you where waiting on the young Mexican to start to impose him-self, but it never happened.  The Champion continued to bag the rounds with constant pressure and a blend of combinations and a much improved defence, tonight the champion done an excellent job of controlling distance.

By the sixth I had vision of the Kevin Johnson vs. Vitali Klitschko bout a few months ago, where kingpin looked happy to go the distance.  Had DeMarco felt the wrath of Valero and opted to win the moral victory in being the first to go the distance with the hard hitting Venezuelan?

El Inca put on a boxing clinic against De Marco in rounds 8 and 9, picking the young Mexican off at will.  The DeMarco corner was asking their fighter if he wanted to continue, the writing was on the wall.  Well behind on the scorecards (every round on my card) DeMarcos corner withdrew their man at the end of the ninth.

Valero boosts his record to 27-0, (27 KO’s).  DeMarco dropped to 23-2-1. (17)
