Forget about the future of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, when is ARUM Retiring

Mark Louis: Many fans question the future of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Its common knowledge Manny Pacquiao’s Mother wants her son to retire and the WBO welterweight champion got his mothers blessing for one more fight before hanging them up to concentrate on his recent success on the political stage.

Concerning Floyd Mayweather Jr, he returned from temporary retirement in 2007 and vowed to have three more fights before retiring to concentrate his efforts on Mayweather promotions.   We are now two fights in and the 33-year-olds next fight could be his last.  I would even go as far as to suggest Floyd’s future hangs on the outcome of his Uncle Rogers court trial which is due to commence on August 2nd, if convicted Floyd Jr could hang them up immediately, as Roger has been a huge part of Floyd’s success, training him since he turned professional in 1996.

When is Bob Arum retiring?

Now don’t get me wrong I’m well aware the promotional roll is a tough one, trying to find a balance between earning your fighter the most lucrative fight with the highest earnings, while keeping the fans happy with an intriguing and competitive match up can’t be easy.
But when it comes to Uncle Bob he seems to have nothing but his own interests on the table, he repeatedly matches his fighters with each other so he can monopolise on the revenue.

Mr Arum would have us think it were he who took boxing back on the big stage, staging a fight billed “The Event” at the Dallas Cowboys stadium.  In truth, this has been happening in Europe for many years, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton filled out football venues in the UK, while in Germany the Klitschko brothers usually sell out football arenas.

Arums “The Event” was nothing more than a calculated money spinner; knowing hardcore fight fans are not so easily fooled Arum used the Stadium as a way of promoting the fight, knowing, as we did, Clottey was not up to the job.  Rewind to the beginning of the year; was there a human on planet earth who actually picked Clottey to win that fight.

Now Bob is up to his old tricks again; setting a “deadline” for Mayweather when he knew fine well Mayweather would not sign any contract until after the availability of his trainer and Uncle Roger who is due to stand trial on August 2nd was clear.

This manoeuvre allowed Arum to make the Pacquiao vs. Margarito (another Arum fighter) bout, while laying the blame at Mayweather’s door for there being no mega fight between him and the Filipino.

Are we really that naive we cannot see the calculated tactics used by Top Rank who are scared to death to match Pacquiao with Mayweather? Also, before he is a fighter Manny Pacquiao is a Man, and every Man should have a say in their affairs, I refuse to accept that Manny or Freddie Roach for that matter has no say in future opponents, I also refuse to accept that they are that stupid they do not recognise the underhand tactics adopted by Top Rank.

As one of the so called world’s leading “promoters” Bob Arum has failed in his attempt (or lack of) to bring us fans the best fight between the two top pound for pound fighters.  Promoters are judged on their matchmaking and after allowing his personal feud with Floyd Mayweather Jr to hinder negotiations Arum should disappear and retire from the sport of boxing.

Well put article, Mayweather wants to fight, so does Pac and so do the trainers and fans.
Arum don't want the fight cos if Manny loses, which more boxing experts predict then there goes his big money maker. If we had one sanctioning body like almost every other sport, this fight would've happened a long time ago.

>--- ARE YOU BLIND? DEAF? Mayweather said he didnt want the fight. His own father said he didnt want the fight for his son.

Good points, but lets not forgot the obvious. Look at the latest news concerning Lance Armstrong, we are living in the time of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Mosley admitted to using and passed the urine test so we all know that it goes on, so did Holyfield, James Toney, and Fernando Vargas. Whether you are rooting for Mayweather or Pacquiao, PEDs are an issue that must be addressed if we want to ever see fair fights both now and in the future. True boxing fans love the sport, and want to see two hard working fighters go at it to see who is the best. But that is not possible if you are running against Marion Jones, or pitching to Barry Bonds. It will absolutely ruin boxing if something is not done to clean up the sport and expecting the Nevada commission to do it is not good enough. Cheating is so rampant in sports that nothing is sacred anymore I was naive to think it had not reached boxing. It is not fair to think of the possibility of a fighter giving his all in the gym only to find himself across the ring from someone who has an unfair advantage. This is bigger than Mayweather vs Pacquiao this for the sport of boxing. Put your flags down for a second and think of the future, these two guys are going to be retired soon and what kind of sport is going to be left behind.

You mentioned Floyd's interest in Mayweather Promotions. Floyd seems to be delaying this fight as much as possible, maybe until Floyd's contract ends with Golden Boy Promotions. Therefore, Mayweather Promotions will reap all the rewards from a Pacquiao fight...instead of having to forgo any fees to Golden Boy Promotions. Furthermore, Pacquiao will be moving up to another weight class to fight Margarito. Did Floyd foresee Pacquiao's increase in weight? If so, which weight class will we see a Mayweather and Pacquiao showdown? Mayweather seems to have the upperhand in all instances. Almost as if Mayweatherwas trying to "FIX THE FIGHT" even before the bell rings. As for P4P #1. COTTO DEFEATED MOSLEY...ENOUGH SAID.

Uncle Bob LMAO, Yes Arum does have his best interests at heart, but who don't, he is only doing what most, if not all promoters are doing. Until Boxing has a governing body this will always happen.

I agree with the previous post if Arum retired De La Hoya would begin to suck the life blood from the sport.

Just a shame the old timers like DaMato and Dundee never had more of an inside roll, because those two put the sport first, even before their own fame and fortune, All arum wants is his ugly mug all over the place, just like Don King used to do waving that flag in the ring.

Truth is to be a promoter you need to be a certain type " A SCUMBAG"

Honestly if Arum was to retire it would only allow Oscar and Golden boy to become the new leach.....
