Timothy Bradley wins Unanimous Decision over Abregu at Welterweight

By Ronald C Charles: As the boxing media indulges in the whole Mayweather – Pacquiao saga and their reluctance to stand and fight each other (for whatever reason), we have a true champion who needs recognition for squaring up against two undefeated fighters in succession.

Seven months ago, WBO light welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley faced the undefeated and highly touted Lamont Peterson who at the time had a record of (27-0-0, 13KO’s).

Tonight Bradley stepped up and challenged in the welterweight division for the first time in his career , and for the second time in succession Bradley faced an undefeated fighter entered the ring at the Agua Caliente Casino, Rancho Mirage, California, United States against the undefeated Argentinean  Luis Carlos Abregu (29-0-0, 23 KOs).

Bradley the visibly smaller man was surprisingly the aggressor and came out on the offensive, using good movement while throwing combinations it was Bradley who made the first dent with a solid right near the end of the second which momentarily hurt Abregu.
Bradley continued to move, outwork and frustrate his Argentinean opponent.  A clash of heads in the seventh forced a lull in the action, (head clashes that have become a common occurrence in Bradley fights) The Referee inspected both fighters for cuts, Abregu requested one moment.  When the action resumed Bradley stunned Abregu and moved in for the finish but the bell sounded to signal the end of the round.

By the championship rounds, Abregu was way behind and was in need of the knockout, his corner implored him to gamble, telling him he required a knockout to keep his undefeated record intact.  Bradley went on to win via a wide unanimous decision.

What’s next for Bradley remains to be seen, but the Californian native finds himself in a division that is rich in talent with young hungry undefeated champions, knockout artists and a few wise veterans.  23-year-old Devon Alexander (20-0-0, 13 KOs) currently holds the WBC and IBF portion of the light welterweight title, and the WBA title is in the position of the popular Amir Khan (23-1-0, 17 KOs) also 23-years-old.

Other notable names include the hard hitting Marcos Rene Maidana (28-1-0, 27 KOs) and Victor Ortiz (27-2-1, 21 KOs).  Zab Judah, has again entered the tussle at light welterweight and would represent an impressive scalp on any of the young hopeful’s records.

On the undercard light middleweight Alfredo Angulo (19-1-0, 16 KOs) won his WBC eliminator blowing away 34-year-old Canadian Joachim Alcine (32-2-0, 19 KOs) in a the first round.
